The Deux-Sèvres department owes its name to two of its main rivers, both named Sèvre: one, the Sèvre-Niortaise, crosses Niort, the capital of the department, and flows into the west, into the ocean, while the other, the Sèvre-Nantaise, heads north towards the Loire, with which it meets in Nantes.
Like the other departments that constitute France, it was created in 1790, during the Revolution.
The text that we present in this album is that published by Adolphe Joanne in 1880.
He is interested in geography, history and economics, as well as the main remarkable sites of Deux-Sèvres.
This album is illustrated with more than 700 photographic documents from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, contemporary documents of the author.
An illustrated dictionary completes this presentation.
All figures come from the census carried out in 1871.
