There are always people who inspired me throughout my life to be who I am and certainly who inspired my life through barkcloth and things...you know...THINGS...vintage things...the people who over the decades have shown up with bolts or a armful of draperies and a story...it has been these kindred spirits I've met that have educated me probably most on vintage textiles...the elderly seniors who happen upon me and my barkcloth wares in wire carts on wheels and dark black blinder sunglasses...who come back always as promised to show me what they have from their first apartment...or their mothers draperies...the ones who hijack me from customers to chat me up about their memories of the fabrics and the stories and memories of lives that existed beneath the draping of a window...cherished memories...nostalgic feelings...always something that grabs my heart every time...one day when this book o' minezez' is finished it will include so many stories that have touched my life...including Bunny Schwartz who had a apartment off Collins Ave in South Beach...she had lived there her whole life...married in 1946 to the love of her life...raised her two sons to be doctors...all in this tidy...neat...and completely original South Beach apartment complete with jalousie windows that cranked out...it was as if stepping back in time...it was the 90's and South Beach was not quite on the cusp of a rebirth...although well on its way...Bunny was in her 80's then...she invited me over after meeting at the market...it was utter shock when I walked into her door and saw these fantastical...whimsical...thoughtfully designed pieces of art draping the windows...in a scene she said was called "underwater life" or something like that she said...they were a wedding gift from her aunt who had them made4 custom for their apartment...rattan furniture and art deco pieces abound...it came together like a beautiful song...I tried my damnedest to buy those draperies that day...but Bunny wasn't budging...I left and we never crossed paths again...Bunny was an icon...but nothing like her underwater life draperies.
This sale is for ONE very rare and fabulous Underwater Life remnant...measures 25 inches wide x 22 inches long...enough for a huge pillow or framed behind glass glamorously...one of the more collectible of patterns and colorways...and in absolutely spectacular shape. ONE of the MOST collectible patterns around!!! A abalone seashell becomes the vase for a plethora of underwater life...a flashy terrestrial flower...a close relative of coral and jellyfish...these brightly colored flowers and sea life come together as if perfectly staged to electrify my heart...a concoction of bold pops of colors...coral pinks...true red...jadeite limes...chartreuse...aquas...and deepest darkest turquoise greens bring this fantastical delight to life...shades of handsome charcoal and dove grays...on a fantastical creamy white ground with mottled wavy squiggles meant to be abstract water...a relic of the late 30's and 40's...textured like we love our authentic barkcloth...thick and nubby as can be...definitely one of the MOST collectible patterns to be had. Flawless.
