1981 Original Photo by PHOTOGRAHER F.D. SCHMIDT Vernon, the new male pygmy chimpanzee on breeding loan from the Stuttgart Zoological Society lounges with Linda at the San Diego Zoo. Vernon wasted no time getting cozy with the 3 San Diego Zoo females of this rare and threatened species. Following his introduction this week, Zoo keepers reported observing breeding behavior between Vernon and exhibit-mates Linda, Loretta and Louise. The bonobo formerly called the pygmy chimpanzee and less often, the dwarf or gracile chimpanzee, is an endangered great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other is Pan troglodytes, or the common chimpanzee.
