1970s NASA MSFC SHUTTLE STS-41D SOLAR ARRAY OAST-1 MODEL +ASTRONAUT SIGNED BOOK:
This recent find comes from Estate of Retired Military Officer and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Aerospace Engineer/Physicist who worked on many projects including Mercury and Apollo missions through Space Shuttle missions that laid the groundwork for the International Space Station/Freedom and played a critical role in the development and launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, including Mission Control (HOSC) - Most importantly Mr. Young (Previous owner) was the Inventor and holds patent on the Solar-Array system that powers Hubble and the "ISS" International Space Station and Freedom. Listing includes a Late 1970's NASA MSFC Graphics and Models Branch OAST-1 SOLAR ARRAY MODEL with its Original Storage Case PLUS ASTRONAUT SIGNED (by 5 OF 6 ASTRONAUTS on the mission) SAFE/DAE BOOKLET, NASA MSFC OAST-1 Booklet and part of a used Solar Array Blanket including an end piece ALL from the Estate of SOLAR ARRAY INVENTOR. Note: Upper foam was missing on blanket part but will be wrapped in big bubble - Also The back arm shown in pics #14 and #15 has a hole that I dont believe had a piece originally in it but in NASA Polaroid photo in box looks like theres a piece of paper that was rolled up inside of it (Photo laying in box referenced is in pic #2) !
Model can be displayed in two ways 1) as shown in polaroid with the panel/blanket stored in Cannister OR - 2) with the panel/blanket extended (2 separate interchangeable pieces). Model case contains 3 Polaroid Photos. 2 of the photos are attached to the inside top of the case and used to show how to store the model pieces in the case. The 3rd photo shows an example of the model put together with one of the interchangeable pieces (retracted). Model and case are in Very Good condition for use and age with some expected wear including two spots on the solar array attachment (one spot needs satellite recemented - see pictures 21-22 and the second is where a small attachment piece is missing (see picture 20 for broken on left side and picture 19 to see what it should look like based on the other display piece). Solar Panel attachment still secures to the model even with missing piece and satellite will sit on model (see picture 21). Solar Panel also has one small wear spot on its front and a hard to see one on its backside - see picture 18, but could likely be glued back down. Very Good condition for use and age and being a interchangeable piece. Base is stamped MSFC 552276 1/10th Scale OAST-1 along with last year inventory label before being presented to Mr. Young at his Retirement - as can be seen in pictures. Inventory Label/number is also on the Base of the Model along with a NASA MSFC Plate "OAST-1 PAYLOAD 1/10 SCALE".
In addition to this ONE OF A KIND piece, the OAST-1 SAFE/DAE BOOKLET is signed on page 16 by five of six of the STS-41D ASTRONAUTS - Resnik/Coats/Hartsfield/Mullane/Hawley - booklet also has a sticky note on front from then NASA MSFC DIRECTOR JR THOMPSON.
This is a Very RARE FIND and was a NASA in house model with inventory number that was provided to inventor at some point before his retirement. Copy of Patent is included in listing, but badge shown in last picture is not included in listing, but shown only for reference. Please see condition description and all picturesand to see More Vintage/Antique Collectibles from this Estate other Estates and several Picks just Click on my Store link and Thank you for Looking...
