The unit was built for the Atomic Energy Commission by the Martin Company. The atomic generator, at the bottom of the cylinder, deriving power from pellets of strontium-90 via a thermo-electric conversion system, operates the electronic instrumentation and automatically transmits weather data every 3 hours.
