1863 CIVIL WAR Soldier Letter - 44th NY DEFENDED LITTLE ROUND TOP AT GETTYSBURG:

Civil War soldier\'s letter, 1 pg., approx. 5\" x 8\", dated at Washington, D.C., Oct. 31, 1863, with letterhead of \"New York State Agency, 181 Pennsylvania Avenue\", from John Nevins to Major Merrill, Paymaster in the Invalid Corps.
Nevins signs the letter with his \"x\" mark - and it is witnessed by John P. Mumford, the N.Y. State Agent for soldiers.
John Nevins, was 38 years old when he enlisted at Greenwich, NY on Sept. 3, 1862, and was mustered into Co. K, 44th NY Infantry on Sept. 25, 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862; Transferred into the Invalid Corps (later designated the Veteran Reserve Corps), on Aug. 11, 1863, and discharged on June 30, 1865 at Washington, D.C. His Regiment, the 44th NY Infantry was one of the 4 Brigades commanded by Lt. Col. Strong Vincent at the Battle of Gettysburg, which valiantly defended Little Round Top on the 2nd day of the battle - another of the 4 Regiments was the 20th Maine, commanded by Joshua Chamberlain.
In this letter, John Nevins asks the paymaster to give some of the pay due to him as a Private in the 44th NY Infantry, to the NY State Agent, \"for money advanced by him as Agent\".
The letter reads:
\"Major Merrill, Paymaster Invalid Corps,
Please retain fifteen dollars 65/100 of the pay due me as private enlisted in Co. K, 44th N.Y.V., now of Co. G, 12th Regt. Invalid Corps, and pay the same to the N.Y. State Agent John P. Mumford for money advanced by him as Agent.
