[Women\'s Rights] Pioneer Margaret Mead Broadened Sexual Conventions -- Photo:
$295.00

MARGARET MEAD (December 16, 1901-November 15, 1978) was an American anthropologist who appeared frequently in the mass media as an author and speaker in the 1960s and 1970s. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Barnard College in New York City and her MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University. Mead served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1975. She was a communicator of anthropology in modern American and Western culture and was often controversial as an academic. Her reports detailing the attitudes towards sex in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia traditional cultures influenced the sexual revolution of the 1960s. She was a proponent of broadening sexual conventions. Mead had an exceptionally close relationship with Ruth Benedict, one of her instructors. In her memoir about her parents, Mead’s daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson, implies that the relationship was partly sexual. Mead never openly identified herself as a lesbian or bisexual, but in her writings, she proposed that an individual’s sexual orientation may evolve throughout life.
