PatrickVincent McNamara(October4, 1894 – April 30, 1966) was anAmericanpolitician. ADemocrat, heserved as aUnited States SenatorfromMichiganfrom1955 until his death from a stroke inBethesda, Marylandin1966. Patrick McNamara was born inNorth Weymouth,Massachusetts, to Patrick Vincent and Mary Jane (née Thynne)McNamara, who wereIrishimmigrants.The oldest of eight children, he received hisearly education at public schools in his native town.He attended the local high school for two and ahalf years before transferring to theFore River ApprenticeSchoolinQuincy, where he learnedthe trade ofpipe fitting.In 1916, he began working as pipe fitter andforeman at theFore River Shipyard.He then played semi-professionalfootballfrom 1919 to 1920.McNamara moved toDetroit,Michigan, where he worked as foreman of a construction crewfor the Grinnell Company. He then married Kathleen Kennedy, with whom he hadtwo children. Mary Jane (1922) and Patrick (1925). His wife died in 1929. Hethen married Mary Mattee in 1930. He then served as job superintendent for R.L.Spitzley Company (1922–1926) and general superintendent of H. Kelly Company(1926–1930).From 1930 to 1932, he took extension courses attheUniversity of MichiganinAnn Arbor. He was maintenance foreman at aChryslerplant (1931–1934) before joining the DonaldMiller Company.In 1937, he became president of Pipe FittersLocal 636, a position he held until 1955.He also served as vice-president of the Detroitchapter of theAmerican Federation ofLaborfrom 1939 to 1945.DuringWorld War II, he served asrent director of theOffice of PriceAdministrationin Detroit from 1942 to 1945.He then joined the Stanley-Carter Company,where he served as superintendent of construction, customer contact man, headof labor relations, and vice-president.In 1946, McNamara made his first venture into politics with a successfulcampaign for an unexpired term on theDetroit City Council.He won twenty-one of the city\'s twenty-threewards, and served until 1947.From 1949 to 1955, he was a member of theDetroit Board of Education.In 1954, McNamara challenged former SenatorBlair Moodyfor theDemocraticnominationfor a seat in theUnited States Senate.Hewas given little chance of defeating Moodyby most political analysts, but won the nomination after Moody died two weeksbefore the primary election.He faced two-termRepublicanincumbentHomer S. Fergusonin the general election, during whichMcNamara criticizedPresidentDwight D. Eisenhower\'seconomic, labor, and farm policies.In November, he narrowly defeated Ferguson by amargin of 51%-49%.McNamara was reelected overAlvin Morell Bentleyin 1960, serving from January 3,1955, until his death inBethesda, Maryland. IntheEighty-seventh Congress,he became the first chairman of theU.S. SenateSpecial Committee on Aging. He also chaired theU.S. Senate Committee on Public Worksin theEighty-eighthandEighty-ninth Congresses.The 1959 committee hearings which Pat McNamara called on the subject of thehealth of the elderly began a public debate which led to the creation ofMedicare. He died of a stroke atBethesda Naval HospitalonApril 30, 1966, aged 71, and was interred inMount Olivet Cemeteryin Detroit. McNamarawas a member ofAmericans for DemocraticAction. ThePatrick V.McNamara Federal Buildingin Detroit was named for him.
