Don Pilcher, born in Los Angeles in 1942, studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Pilcher studied with the greats – Shoji Hamada, Otto and Vivika Heino, Norm Schulman, Robert Archambeau and Ralph Bacerra. He held the position of professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois since 1966.

Our “Bowl” was created in the 1980s before he quit producing ceramics in 1986. In the 60s, 70s and 80, says close friend and potter Tom Turner, “Don Pilcher was one of the dominate ceramics artists in the Midwest, make huge stoneware pots and beautiful porcelain bowls with incredible glazes. He had it all—material, process, form”. Then he was gone. He sold his kick wheel and started teaching design instead of ceramics and until recently he has been constructing large sculptural pieces using various materials other than clay.
