Age is pre-Cambrian, 600 million years to 1 billion years.
Environment of deposition was a shallow muddy shoreline, subject to frequent water level fluctuation and high sedimentation rate, resulting in rapid, deep and successive episodes of burial. Examination of ripple marks at any lake or ocean reveals they are actually moving as they form, thus to find this level of preservation is uncommon.
Turofferity ripple marks result from sediment being pushed back and forth as the ripple forms at the shoreline, as opposed to current ripples, which indicate water flow in one direction.
Excellent specimen....about 22 inches long, about 20 lbs...NOTE: This is a negative of the actual ripple formed, that is, this is the sediment which buried the original.
