CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF DR. EDWIN SMITH VAIL, OUTSIDE VAIL SANITARIUM. [Hartford, CT]: [No Photographer], [c.1890]. Original cabinet card photograph. Albumen print on cardstock mount (5 x 8 inches). Identified on verso: “Edwin Smith Vail.” Portrait of Dr. Edwin Smith Vail seated in his horse drawn carriage, outside Vail Sanitarium. Very good condition, with light wear and soiling. Please see photographs to help best assess condition. The Vail Sanitarium was opened by Dr. Edwin Smith Vail in 1890 (at 1165 Enfield Street, Enfield). According to the Enfield Historical Society, Dr. Vail treated numerous patients suffering from nervous, mental, alcohol, and drug problems. In 1940, the sanatorium closed and the building was converted into the Elmcroft Inn, then the Parkway Inn & Restaurant. The building was demolished around 1983. Two years later, approval was granted to construct the Vail Estates condominiums, which exist there today. A nice piece of Enfield, CT history.
