This is the beak of a Humboldt squid, one of the most voracious predators in the ocean. This is a very large specimen measuring roughly 3 1/8 inches in length. To give it some scale and I\'ve set it next to an average sized beak from a 30 pound (13 kgs) squid in photo 4. As you can see, there\'s a huge difference.
FYI, the two halves have been mounted together since they come out of the squid separately and are attached by a round white muscle when inside its body that moves them back and forth.
It is in very good condition with the exception of a chip on the top half that can be seen in photo 5. Still an excellent, huge specimen though or I certainly wouldn\'t be selling it.
Along with this beak, you will receive 1 of the sharp sucker rings that I remove from the tentacles and one eye lens from one of the largest eyes in the animal kingdom.
If you know anything about Humboldts from watching National Geographic, Animal Planet, or Discovery, you\'ll know they\'re some of the most voracious predators in the ocean. I have personally witnessed them tear a hooked comrade to pieces when I have it on the line, leaving me nothing but an eye to reel in. They\'re also one of the fastest growing creatures on earth, going from a single cell to over 100 pounds in only one year.
