Vintage Mortens Studio Rearing Horse Enamel On Metal Beautiful Pinto 1950s-60s:
Rare Vintage Mortens Studio Rearing Horse Enamel on Metal. Gold Mortens Studio Royal Designs original sticker is intact as is a second smaller label of copyright. The enamel is shiny and the colors are rich. My equestrian friend tells me she remembers these souvenirs at the horse show venders as a child. Very nostalgic.
This sweet faced pinto has one chipped ear. As I have tried to demonstrate in pictures, the chip is only noticed if you are looking down on the horse. Pretty sweet condition for a 70+ year old figurine. I also found that he could be posed in a rearing position as well as on three legs, tail then off the ground.
Information found on Mortens Studio: Oscar Morten was a swede who emigrated to the US and became a naturalized citizen. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and at the Berlin Academy of Art. He lived in Arizona at least part of the time the company was active and modeled the figures while Gunnar Thelin applied the baked on glazes. The company was located in Chicago, Illinois from 1931 until the 1950s. Oscar Morten designed over 300 firguines of different animals. The figurines are heavier than most and made of a solid plaster or porcelain built over a metal frame. The high gloss baked on glaze had a tendency to chip and crack so it is rare to find pieces today that are in good condition.
