Vintage Our Lady of Loreto Relic from THE HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO, ITALY Dated 1962, with original packaging as shown

The "Basilica della Santa Casa" has beenapilgrimage destination since the 14th century, andenshrines the house in which Catholics believe The Annunciation occurred and theBlessed Virgin Mary lived. Tradition says that a band of angels scooped up the little house from the Holy Land, and transported it to Italy; this flight led to her becoming Patroness of Aviation, for safe travel and the protection of people involved in aviation.Card is vintage from the 1960s and comes with original (now yellowed) wax paper envelope marked: "RELIQUIA DEL VIVO che il Venerdi e il sabato Santo ricopre la Sacra Statua della Madonna di Loreto." TRANSLATION: "Relic of the Veilof Our Lady of Loretothat onGood Fridayand Saturday covers the Sacred Statue of Our Lady."

This practice of shrouding religious statues during Lent dated back centuries, typically using liturgical purple to cover and often lasts for the whole of Passiontide. However, this particular statue is veiled in black and occurs only on Good Friday, in mourning by the Blessed Mother for Jesus' death. It remains covered throughout Holy Saturday, until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.This holy card has a certified fragment attached of the black organza mourning veil worn by the statue on Good Friday in 1962.

After Easter the veil was cut up into little pieces and distributed among the pilgrims as relics, a custom that continues today. Card measures 2 1/2" x 4" with 3/4" piece of blessed veil attached by red seal as shown. Full color image of the famous "Black Madonna" OL Loreto with Virgo Laurentana stamped below, relic is well attached; reverse has PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LORETO granting 300 day Indulgence and is dated 1962. Card has light wear, overall very good for being 60 years old, with some creasing and one tiny tear on left edge, overall very good and vibrant color for age. Comes with original packaging as it was issued in Italy, a wax sleeve now yellowed from time that states (in Italian) that it is a genuine veil relic that covered the statue on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
