An exquisite ancient hominid (Homo erectus) pointed stone hand axe from Northern Africa (Tamanghaset, Algeria.) Acheulian Age. About 500,000 - 60,000 years old. This specimen is nearly perfect with a translucent honey colored agate-like point, desert patina and a few handling marks. Possibly chert. About 5 1/2\" x 2 1/2\" x 1 1/2\". I\'ve had this in my collection for over 25 years, but I was not the original collector and have no additional data.We\'re downsizing, and it\'s time for me to move my collection on to others.I ship by US Priority Mail and can combine shipment for sales closing during the same weekend - if you let me know you are offerding on other items.
According to the Smithsonian Institution, Homo erectus was the first humanoid species to show modern body proportions. Soon after their first appearance in the fossil record, there is evidence of stone working. This Acheulean technology was distinguished by large stone hand axes and cleavers. While Acheulean technology was widespread, most specimens are difficult to date conclusively, because they are found exposed in arid locations, where the sands have shifted over time. However, their technology is distinctive and is easily distinguished from Neolithic artifacts by shape, weathering, and patina.
