The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers #10, The IdiotsAbroad, Part Three, 2nd Printing, 1987, 36 pages, Rip Off Press

The Idiots Abroad saga concludes with part three inFreak Brothers #10. If you want to avoid the spoilers that follow, don\'t readthe next six paragraphs of this review!

Part three picks up right where part two left off, with Freddy and Franklin hauling Phineas around the Sahara desert on hisauto/throne. They all pause for a worldwide TV broadcast of Phineas\' dailyevangelism before proceeding on to Phineas\' castle on the shore of theMediterranean Sea. At the castle, Franklin and Freddy are forced to complete agrueling educational and physical fitness curriculum to earn their citizenshipin the new era world government.

Even after gaining citizenship and being awardedtheir freedom from slavery, Franklin and Freddy continue to be controlled bythe power of Phineas\' enormous wealth. Halfway around the world, ColonelCornbelt, military leader of the new world government, recognizes Phineas\'immense influence on society and offers to appoint him as the Emperor of Earth;an offer that Phineas self-righteously accepts. That\'s the last straw forFranklin and Freddy, who escape that very night and journey to Barcelona tovisit Freddy\'s old pal, Pablo Pegaso.

Pablo explains his elaborate plan to protect himselfand his crew from the nuclear war that he is certain will soon begin, whichinvolves a high-tech platform that will float above the ongoing war below. Heoffers Franklin and Freddy jobs on his crew, but the two are dead set onexacting revenge upon Phineas during his coronation ceremony, which will takeplace on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland.

Just as the coronation ceremony is about to begin,Franklin and Freddy are swimming across Loch Ness to get past security for theevent and accidentally dredge up the nuclear bomb that Freddy stole from theterrorists six months ago. At the same time, Colonel Cornbelt and his partnerin crime, Andre the Hyena, corner Phineas on stage and threaten his life, attempting to force Phineas to use his power over the common people for theirown ambitions. At the last minute, Phineas bravely refutes them and confesseshis sham religion to a crowd of millions, who storm the stage in anger. Amidstthe confusion, the Freak Brothers escape in a plane and fly to Central America, where they bail out and land in the middle of Pablo Pegaso\'s base station forhis floating platform.

Happy to be alive, the boys accept positions asmaintenance workers for the platform, and for the next several weeks adapt to asimple way of life, including smoking as much pot as they can, which leads themall to revert back to their slovenly personas and burned-out intellects. Theirtoking unwittingly exposes the floating platform to detection by the military, who quickly surround Pablo\'s base station. A huge conflict erupts, leading togunshots, mayhem, an exploding bomb, an erupting volcano, and a last-secondescape from a death-trap for our heroes.

The epic saga ends with the Freak Brothers returninghome to their old apartment in the slums, where they will no doubt resume theirprevious drug-soaked lives and never wish to travel again.

The Idiots Abroad, despite being anomalous to therest of the Freak Brothers canon, is an entertaining tale that manages to takethe characters full circle through an absurd and fantastic adventure. The storyreceived mostly positive critical acclaim upon its conclusion, including beingnamed by The Comics Journal in 1999 as one of the top 100 comic stories of the20th century.

The story was certainly an enjoyable read for me, andI admire the ambition Shelton and Mavrides demonstrated by crafting suchlong-form comic fiction. In essence, The Idiots Abroad is a graphic novel, (itwas later compiled into a separate book), but the original books came out whengraphic novels were still in their infancy. The story is quite cinematic in itsscope, which comes as no surprise from Shelton, who has always had the movieproducer bug in his creative spirit.

Sometimes I question whether it was advisable to takethe Freak Brothers so far out of character to pursue such broad ambitions, especially with Phineas, who went mad with power upon getting filthy rich. ButI don\'t want to bitch about underground blasphemy when the story itself is sorichly detailed and entertaining. And its not like Phineas was a stranger togoing mad.

After The Idiots Abroad was completed, Shelton andMavrides did not return to such fanciful storytelling with future FreakBrothers comic books. Of course, the production of new Freak Brothers comicswas nearing the end anyway, with only one-and-a-half books of new materialreleased over the next five years and then a reprint of older stories for thefinal issue of the title in 1997. But those one-and-a-half books of newmaterial were like a healing salve for this Freak Brothers fan; a return tonormalcy after the temporary insanity of The Idiots Abroad.

But I don\'t begrudge Shelton and Mavrides a few yearsof insanity when it provided such an

There was alittle store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics. EveryFriday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest versionjust hitting the shelves. With several of my hippy friends grooving, andlaughing over Comics, we’d sit around that smoke-filled room, sometimes lateinto the night.Fast forward, some fifty years later–my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in theback of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds ofunderground comics that had only been read once, were in beautifulcondition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold. We wrote todozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory. They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing for thecollection. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless. Now we offer them on E-Bay and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our morethan fair and reasonable prices. Many we had universally certified withCGC, so you’ll know we’re trustworthy, reliable and have the best ofservice. Just check the response and reviews to know we’re honest andresponsible.
