The Complete Cheech Wizard #2, Only Printing /1987 / 36 Pages / Rip Off Press $2.25Cover price. Any publication claiming tobe "the complete" anything is just asking for trouble. It's prettyhard to compile everything ever done with a single character by a singlecreator, especially one as prolific as Vaughn Frederic Bodé. But Rip Off Pressdoes an admirable job with their four-issue anthology, The Complete CheechWizard. There may be a few gaps along the way (and I'm not the Bodéphile toidentify them), but that doesn't diminish the satisfaction of perusing thiscompilation of Bodé's most enigmatic character. Comic has a slight spinwrinkle. Introduction by Barbara Bode’ HISTORICALFOOTNOTES: It is currently unknown how many copies were printed of this comicbook. It has not been reprinted.COMIC CREATOR: Vaughn Bodé - 1-36 and both frontand back covers.

Vaughn Frederic Bodé created his signaturecharacter Cheech Wizard way back in 1957, when he was merely a lad of 16.Though the yellow-hatted "cartoon messiah" did not officially seeprint for over a decade, he went on to become Bodé's best-known and mostenduring comic book character. Cheech Wizard appeared in a variety ofundergrounds and in a monthly one-pager with National Lampoon forseveral years before Bodé's self-inflicted death in 1975 at the tender age of34.

Cheech Wizard resides in some sort of fantasy-land jungle or backwoods with avariety of characters, including his on again/off again lizard pal Razzberry.There are no human males in these backwoods, but there are some luscious women,including one in particular that Cheech Wizard enjoins for all manners offucking and sucking (primarily off camera). In fact, Cheech Wizard is primarilyconcerned about only one thing: his own pleasure, whether that is accompaniedby a woman, a beer or just his own company. He is occasionally prone tophilosophizing, but prefers to dish out insults with his twisted-syntaxdialect. Bodé never allowed Cheech Wizard's face to be shown, though it isknown that Cheech Wizard removed his hat on at least a couple of occasions.

Cheech Wizard maintains a measurable amount of popularity even today. Bodé'sunique cartoon style influenced illustrators and grafitti artists for decades,and his influence can also be seen in certain animated works, including thoseby his friend, Ralph Bakshi. After Bodé's death, Rip Off Press anthologized theCheech Wizard oeuvre in a four-issue run of comic books, The Complete CheechWizard, which is also available in paperback form. In the decades afterBodé's passing, his son Mark produced additional Cheech Wizard adventures,including comics that were partially completed by his father. Mark Bodé'sCheech Wizard comics come admirably close to replicating his father's singularstyle, but it is hard to accept that Cheech Wizard can be given life by anyonebut Vaughn Bodé.
