Golden stellar beam calcite dog tooth calcite crystal cluster honey double terminated mineral specimen from the "Gem Pocket" Elmwood Mine Smith County Tennessee.

This amazing specimen measures 42 mm by 22 mm by 18 mm. It weighs 12.89 grams.

I got this fromthe Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and purchased it directly from the miner who collected it. This is a gorgeous Stellar beam calcite - also called Dogtooth calcite from the famous Elmwood mine in Tennessee. This mine is known for the most gorgeous calcite known to man and this piece was found in an area of the mine called the "Gem Pocket" where the best of the best pieces are found. This gemmy natural untreated raw honey yellow milky shiny crystal cluster mineral specimen looks amazing.

Calcite is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is a very common mineral, particularly as a component of limestone. Calcite defines hardness 3 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, based on scratch hardness comparison. Large calcite crystals are used in optical equipment, and limestone composed mostly of calcite has numerous uses.

Known in the mineral community as dog-tooth calcite, the name Stellar Beam was coined by Katrina Raphaell.These crystals have the shape of dog’s teeth or more in keeping with their energy, rocket ships. They are classified as scalenohedron and can be single or double terminated. I have also seen these crystals in yellow, red and white. The golden ones most commonly come from the Elmwood Mine in Tennessee (which is now closed) and can have a high translucency. I also have seen some beautiful pieces from Missouri. A rock hound friend of mine found a pocket of Stellar Beams in Montana, a relatively rare locale. These crystals are a richer gold and somewhat less translucent. I was able to purchase much of what he found.
