1) 1890s advertisement of Sheffield knifes, most of which are also in the lot.

2) mid 1800s IXL WOSTENHOLM Bowie knife with stag handle excellent condition

This is a extremely collectible and rare Bowie knife.

Wostenholm company (IXL) marked bowie knives for export to the USA during the mid to late 1800's. It's been estimated that Sheffield England cutlery firms may have made up to 90 percent of all the Bowie style knives sold in America during the Bowie Knife's heyday. Of those Sheffield makers, the Wostenholm IXL brand had one of the most popular followings in America for their quality made Bowie knife offerings.

3) mid 1800s NON XLL Joseph Allen & Sons Bowie stag handle excellent condition

Allen built a reputation for his hollow ground blades. In 1883, Joseph Allen & Sons acquired the "NON-XLL" mark from Unwin & Rodgers, which he stamped on the razors and other cutlery. A lot of Allen's knives and razors were often exported to America. The US firm Adolph Kastor also paid Allen a royalty for the use of its "NON-XLL" mark, because of the resemblance to Wostenholm's "I*XL".

4) mid 1800s NON XLL Joseph Allen & Sons Bowie with deer foot handle excellent condition

5) mid 1800s NON XLL Joseph Allen & Sons Dirk or prostitutes dagger. Excellent condition

NON-XLL Joseph Allen Pearl handled dirk Beautiful mother of pearl dirk, 7 ¾ inch overall with a 4 ½ inch dagger blade. The ricasso is stamped NON-XLL, which is a play on their competitor IXL, in addition to Joseph, Allen and Sons, Sheffield and England in five lines also stamped on the ricasso. These small dirks are affectionately known as garter knives, prostitute knives and gamblers knife. Of course plenty of other men and women would have carried these because they are so concealable. The knife appears to be unused with some minor patina on the blade and its beautiful original crocus polish. It has an oval German silver guard and a German silver fancy ferrule
