This is a rare RPPC real photo postcard of the Steamboat Ellen. At the time of writing this, this is the only definitive postcard (or photo) of the steamboat Ellen on this website. Any steamer collector or enthusiast would enjoy having this piece in their collection.

The steamboat Ellen at the dedication of the Mark Twain Bridge in Hannibal, MO. Ellen was built in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 1907 and owned by Sawyer Austin Lumber Co. of LaCrosse. W. W. Cargill, of this company, used her part time as a rafter and for pleasure. Ellen was bought by USE, Rock Island, IL and during the 1930s, Captain John F. Suiter was her owner.

He raised his family in a home on River Drive in Princeton, IA. He was the grandson of Phil Suiter who came to LeClaire Iowa in 1835. Phil learned how to navigate the LeClaire rapids from the Indians and assisted Robert E. Lee in surveying the Mississippi Rapids between LeClaire and Davenport in 1837. Phil became the first licensed pilot in the area and had the first recorded deed to land in Scott County. Ellen was sold to Ralph M. James in 1943.

Please inspect the pictures, as they give the best representation of condition. There are some smudges, scrapbook residue on the back, and a crease running from top to bottom just off of center.
