Here is a rare and superb fossil Pipefish from the Monterey Formation in Santa Barbara County, California. Species is Hipposybnathus imporcitor. From the Miocene, 5 to 8 million years ago. No paint or restoration was added. The plate is about 6.6" by 5.8", and it weighs 11.6 oz. (332g) .
Measuring about 6.4 inches from tip to tip, the pipefish would be closer to 9 inches if the fish were straightened out. Enlarge the photos and check out the features of the skull, very cool.
Pipefish are related to seahorses, with a "horselike head, prehensile tail, independently moving eyes, and brood pouch. They have long, tubular snouts and small, toothless mouths. Their bodies are covered with consecutive rings of bony plates."- Wikipedia
