A rare signed antique "Benedict Studio" table lamp in excellent condition, dates from1905. The large copper lamp base measures 25” Tall and and 7” Square at the base. There are two original sockets and pull chains in proper working order. The base retains it's original bronze patina intact. The raised Lion head is repeated on the front and back sides and an embossed Benedict or architectural logo is repeated on the lower other sides.The shade is a beautiful solid celadon green dome shape Mosaic measuring 18.25” Wide and 7” Tall. There are two minor hairlines on one side, but no missing or loose glass. The (unsigned) shade is tight and very well made, and dates from the same time period as the base, circa 1906. The Benedict Company had two marks. The earlier of the two shows the name "Benedict Studio” with a hammer and anvil, and the second, later mark was a diamond with a bee in the center flanked by the capital letter “B”. This mark is usually accompanied by a number, which suggests Benedict produced a catalog. The Benedict Manufacturing Company of East Syracuse, NY purchased the Onondaga Metal Shops in October 1906, continuing the business in the nameBenedict Art Studios. The next year, in 1907, Benedict Art Studios came out with a stunning 80-page trade catalogue featuring halftone photographs of more than 150 different forms of Arts and Crafts metalwork in hand-wrought iron, brass and copper, including lamps, chandeliers, hanging lanterns, chafing dishes, candlesticks, andirons, and many other articles. As Benedict collectors have known for some time, the quality of Onondaga Metal Shops and early Benedict Art Studios hand-wrought metalwork rivaled that of any other shops, including Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops in the neighboring town of Eastwood, NY.
