Siegfried Fred Singer(September 27,1924 – April 6, 2020)was an Austrian-born American physicist andemeritus professor of environmental science at theUniversity of Virginia,trained as anatmospheric physicist. Hewas known for rejecting the scientific consensus on several issues:

·climate change,

·theconnection betweenUV-Bexposure andmelanomarates,

·stratosphericozonelossbeing caused bychlorofluoro compounds, often used asrefrigerants,and

·thehealth risks ofpassive smoking.

He is the author or editor of severalbooks includingGlobal Effects of Environmental Pollution(1970),TheOcean in Human Affairs(1989),Global Climate Change(1989),TheGreenhouse Debate Continued(1992), andHot Talk, Cold Science(1997).He also co-authoredUnstoppableGlobal Warming: Every 1,500 Years(2007) withDennis Avery, andClimate Change Reconsidered(2009)withCraig Idso. Singer had a varied career, serving inthe armed forces, government, and academia. He designedminesfor theU.S. NavyduringWorld War II, before obtaining his Ph.D. in physics fromPrinceton Universityin1948 and working as a scientific liaison officer in theU.S. Embassyin London.He became a leading figure in early spaceresearch, was involved in the development ofearth observationsatellites, and in 1962 established theNational Weather Bureau'sSatellite Service Center. He was the founding dean of theUniversity of MiamiSchoolof Environmental and Planetary Sciences in 1964, and held several governmentpositions, including deputy assistant administrator for theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency, and chief scientist for theDepartmentof Transportation. He held a professorship with the University ofVirginia from 1971 until 1994, and withGeorge Mason Universityuntil2000.In 1990 Singer founded theScience& Environmental Policy Project, and in 2006 was named by theCanadian Broadcasting Corporationas one of a minority ofscientists said to be creating a stand-off on a consensus on climate change Singerargued, contrary to thescientificconsensus on climate change, that there is no evidence that globalwarming is attributable to human-caused increases in atmosphericcarbon dioxide, and that humanity would benefit iftemperatures do rise. He was an opponent of theKyoto Protocol, and has claimed thatclimate modelsareneither based on reality nor evidence. Singer was accused of rejectingpeer-reviewed and independently confirmed scientific evidence in his claimsconcerning public health and environmental issues.
