Hand-painted porcelain oval portraits were popular prior to the invention of photography. A beautiful original early 19tyh century hand painted chestview portrait of a young woman in a circa 1820s era gown, with vibrant colors, approximately 3.5 x 3\" The original standing brass case has a folding back rest. The back of the protrait is lined with a loose knit fabric; the portrait is painted on white gypsum, and the reverse bears the imprinted numeral \"15\" and black ink stamped artist name \"Recaminviar\". The front appears to have a celluloid cover protecting the portrait. Minor spotting on the cover, wear on the reverse mesh lining, Overall VG. The image came from a Hopatcong, New Jersey estate.
