The 1991 Lesbian & Gay Film Festival was a daring moveby gay activists to organize an event in orderto gain acceptance from an intolerant society. For eight revolutionary days in Moscow and Leningrad, Soviet citizens wereoffered their first major exposure to lesbian and gay cinema. Though there were serious concern that the authorities would use the event as an excuse to attackLGBTcommunity, nothing ever materialized. On the contrary, the event was a huge success and is credited as the first organized openly gayevent in Russian history.
