Northwest Coast Native Cedar Adolescent Spirit Mask:
$250.00

This is a striking and enigmatic Northwest Coast Native mask by First Nations Kwakwaka\'wakw artist Gilbert Dawson. It measures 8 inches by 7 inches by 4 inches and is signed on the inside. This piece represents the \"adolescent spirit\" and stands as an emotive expression of teenage diffidence. It is from a Vancouver estate and displays some surface scuffs/chips. These imperfections reflect the theme of the mask: rough around the edges but soon to develop and mature.Gilbert Dawson holds Wolf, Sun, and Sisiutl as his crests. He has been carving since 1995. Gilbert has worked with Beau Dick, Bruce Alfred, Sam Shaughnessy, Don Svanvyc, Joe Pederson, and Joe Wilson. He has also immersed himself in the Kwak\'wala language, and has learned more than 75 ceremonial songs. He is the nephew of jewellery carver John Lancaster. In July of 2001, he carved many masks for a potlatch hosted by James Speck.Masks were originally designed for use in both spiritual and secular ceremonies. The realistic and supernatural figures depicted are thought to imbue the wearer with the figure’s traits, knowledge and powers. Masks designed for functional use are only danced on special occasions and are stored away for much of each year. There are many types of masks: mourning masks, transformation masks, clown masks, shamanic masks, and masks designed for specific ceremonies. It is common to find secondary faces and figures within masks (which can be found in the mouth, ears, top of the head, etc) and these are often associated with transformation. A great number of masks are now created for the art market. These masks often lack bite plates and eye holes and are not able to be danced.\"youth mask\", \"native mask\", \"small indian mask\", \"small mask\", \"indigenous mask\"
