Nice Stanley Bailey No 5 WWII type 17 c1942 Clean Tuned & Sharp :
$91.99

This is a very nice and clean early WWII example with all original parts. The rosewood tote and knob are something of an oddity for a war production plane but this is very likely an early version. Everything is in excellent working condition and it\'s ready to use. Another variation with the solid \"bakelite\" knob, rosewood and frog adjusting screw.
This No 5 shares the common characteristics of those Bailey planes produced during WWII.War time production planes were something of an oddity and hardly consistent in feature. Many produced during the time had plastic (bakelite) or large or small diameter steel depth adjusting knobs, some blued, some plain and single piece steel screws for the hardwood tote and knob or the early version, as this one is, with rosewood and the 2 piece brass nut steel rod hardware and solid \"bakelite\" depth adjusting knob. Some were made without frog adjusting screws and some came with them (this one does ). Unlike this example, many produced during the war had a thicker, heavier casting and why remains something of a mystery. Almost all produced during the time had the standard \"kidneyshape hole\"lever cap with a plane, most with the patent number cast into the back, rough and unembellished finish as on this example. In short, Stanley was making due with available stock and materials and was also providing tools for the military war effort, probably under contract and for the lowest cost possible. You will see many different combinations of parts and configurations coming out of this period, perhaps the onecharacteristic featureof the planes produced during the war-no consistency. Additional information about Bailey plane typing may be found at[link removed by ](a plethora of information)and[link removed by ](fun and informational). The original Bailey bench plane type study may be found in the appendix pages of the reference bookPatentedTransitionaland Metallic Planes in America 1827-1927 Volume Iby Roger K. Smith, also a great reference for American planes in general.
As mentioned above this example appears to have all original parts and little used. Japanning is a bit marred though near 100 percent and the near full length trademark \"BB\" iron has been flattened, the bevel has been set at 25 degrees and it is razor sharp as can be seen by the wispy fine shavings in the photos. It bears the number 142 stamped in the back indicating that the production of this plane occurred around the first quarter of 1942, just a few months after the start of the war. The unusual rosewood tote and knob retain the finish applied at the factory, though it does show some age wear and \"crackling\". The bottom has been lapped smooth and flat but the sides left in their natural \"as found\" condition. Note the excellent performance of this old relic and the full width, translucent shavings. Clearly, ready to use though a new owner may wish to fine tune to their own personal specifications.Because of some recent buyer confusion over what exactly is \"ready to use/user ready/user friendly\" let me provideyou with a detailed description ofmy interpretationof these terms. If you buy a plane from me it will be ready to use unless otherwise stated. However, let me state emphatically the bottom will not beperfectlyflatnorperfectlysquare in relation to the sides and isn\'t guaranteed to be such. The wood may have dings and dents indicative of its use over the 50-150 years of its lifeso the japanningmaybe missing in areas, have marring, dings, scratches, etc. The plane may not be completely and totally free of rust and/or corrosion. The cutter, chip breaker, lever cap and maybe the frogmay be imperfect with a few chips or dings but unless stated otherwise IT WILL WORK AS IT WAS INTENDED at the time of its manufacture. I will endeavor to specifically enumerate any obvious defects, cosmetic or otherwise, any clear variations from the type or any other anomalies that may be present. Theywill beclean and usable to the degree that they work, the bottoms at least have been lapped to remove the significant imperfections but I don\'t run a flatness meter over them to make sure they meet some nebulous specification or someone else\'s definition of \"FLAT\". I sell mostly to new or learning woodworkers who don\'t want to spend a lot of money on a Lie Nielson, Veritas, or Bridge City Tool Works plane, or don\'t know that much about them and want something that they can feel comfortable with, put on a piece of wood and make shavings. To those folks my planes are what I consider \"User Ready\" or \"User Friendly\" and they are priced to appeal to that market. If you have questions, I am more than willing to answer and will do so promptly.

I believe in pricing realistically and reasonably based on condition so it\'s likely that you\'ll find more and less expensive examples out there on and elsewhere, but I don\'t think you will find a better value for one that is formost intents and purposes, ready to use. Take a look at the photos, see what you think and then you be the judge.It\'s important that you know exactly what you are buying/offerding on so please review the photos and description carefully. If you have questions, please ask and I will respond promptly. I do accept returnsand per policy, buyer is responsible for return shipping.I ship USPS Priority Mail as I find it reliable, expedient, generally the least expensive for the buyer andit\'s insured, (just in case).
