Original NASA Apollo Lunar Module Mooncraft Artifact
* Vintage NASA Apollo / Grumman Lunar Module Mooncraft 'Remove Before Flight' Hardware Safeguard/Restraint Block *
This artifact was designed to hold critical flight hardware in a secure position on the Apollo Lunar Module while it was being transportedfrom Grumman in New York to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and while it was placed on the Saturn V Launch Vehicle stack inside of the Vehicle Assembly Building. It would have been removed from the LM spaceraft just prior to launch from Cape Canaveral to the Moon. Many of these 'Remove Before Flight' articles were used on multiple Lunar Modules, and they were removed from service at the end of the Apollo Moon Landing program.
NASA's prime Lunar Module spacecraft contractor, Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, manufactured this "Remove Before Flight" protective structure. It'sconstructed from a highly inert Teflon compound which resists contaminating the mooncraft with any kind of foreign material. The notches were carefully handcrafted to match the corresponding Lunar Module hardware component.
