Hardcover. Black, Possible Leather with gilt lettering. Silk ribbon marker,unattached. Illustrations plus additional 12 Illustrated Plates, covered with tissue. All paper edges are gilt.

A.M. 5638 is Jewish lunar calendar. This translates to starting at Fall of 1877-1878.


1877.Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America. Charleston. 9.25”x 6.5” x 1.5”. 1 lb 10.3 oz. 293pp.


Condition: Good-Fair

Spine intact. Part of spine torn off. Some spots and fading. Imprint of possible library label noted, but label is absent. Imprint of the tape on spine and both covers. Some fading of Gilt on Spine. Spine has fraying, tears at top and bottom. Shelfworn and rubbing.

Front cover has some fading. Edges frayed, with some open tears. Rubbing on front cover on left side towards the bottom removed some of original texture. Back cover has open tears, some fading. Edges of both covers noted with rubbing and open tears. Spine cracked at hinges for both covers, but still attached to the rest of the book. Some smudges noted on front and back endpapers.

All paper edges have gilt with some scratches and fading. Some pages wavy or with wrinkles at bottom. No writing or underlining on the pages. Tears of pages only noted on hinges which have front and back endpapers. Pages clean except a few with some smudges. Some of the plates appear to have light foxing. Stains on p. 180-181, which could be foxing.


Synopsis:

Albert Pike was the Sovereign Grand Commander for. Scottish Rite, 1859-1891. The Liturgy has also been known as the manual or monitor of the Scottish Rite Degrees of Freemasonry. This book deals with the 19° through the 30°. It discusses the rituals and symbolism of each degree. There are 12 beautifully Illustrated Plates, 1 per degree. The plates are covered with tissue. Each shows the regalia for each degree. The description of the Lodge, Chapter or Council, with its furniture, decorations, officers, titles, etc needed to do each specific degree.

Each chapter includes extracts from the rituals and ceremonies, as well as the lectures for the Degrees, and an explanation in full of the symbolism on display for the newly made and longtime Mason alike.
