Graptolites are fossil colonial animals who lived from the Upper Cambrian through the Lower Carboniferous Period. The name graptolite comes from the Greek graptos, meaning \'written\', & lithos, meaning \'rock\', as many graptolite fossils resemble hieroglyphs written on the rock.
