FOSSIL HORSE TOOTH - Duette, Florida IMC Phosphate Pit - Miocene AgePersonally collected 2002 during an escorted field trip to the former IMC phosphate mining operation outside Duette, Manatee County, Florida. Geological age slated as Miocene by Florida Geological Survey.
Specimen was wrapped and transported from the site in padded material. Once home, tooth was carefully-cleaned and stored past of a personal avocational paleontologist's fossil collection in a non-smoker home, now being shared by like-minded folk. The specimen measures over 2-inches in length by 0.5 inches wide, has not been worked, beyond brush cleaning, nor sealed with any preservative.
Photos show all four sides of the preserved dentin, bottom and crown top (with distinctive patterns).
From MinDat: The Duette Phosphorus-Phosphates Mine is situated in close proximity to Duette, Florida, within the Manatee Phosphate Mining District, which has a rich history in mining endeavors. Its discovery can be traced back to the year 1900. The mining operation at Duette primarily involves surface mining techniques. The ore deposit at the Duette mine exhibits an irregular shape, measuring approximately 5,960 meters (19,553 feet) in length, 5,960 meters (19,553 feet) in width, and with a thickness of 9 meters (31 feet). The surrounding area features the Floridian Section of the Atlantic Plain, which presents distinctive geological and geomorphological characteristics.
