Gobicyonis an extinctgenusof large-sizedcarnivoranmammals, belonging to theAmphicyonidae("bear dogs"), that was discovered inChina,Mongolia, andSerbia, and lived during theMiddle Mioceneepoch. Despite only being known from rather fragmentary remains, recent discoveries showcase that it was an aberrant member of the subfamilyHaplocyoninae, with adaptions towards bone-crushing similar to those of ahyena.Amphicyonidaewas also, thecursorialcarnivore during this era beforeCanidae predator arrived ineastAsia.

Gobicyonwas a large amphicyonid, withG. serbiaehaving been estimated at 109kgand the remains from Laogou at 162kg.It should however be noted, thatGobicyonis only known from cranial and dental remains, which may lead to an overestimation of their mass, as some amphicyonids possess disproportionately large heads in comparison to their body size.

The characteristic traits ofGobicyonare a short snout, deep mandibular ramus, an extremely broad and robust symphysis, giving it a hyaena-like appearance, and large premolars. A platform is formed by the dorsal face of the symphysis, similar to the condition seen in theAfrican wild dog. This enhancement is correlated with the ability to better handle large prey.

G.yei is a species named in 2019, whichrefers to a more primitive species compared to G.macrognathus, the type species of the fossil skull is preserved in a great condition, with gorgeous enamel details and elegant coloration.
