This fully polished, cabochon shaped amber fossil from the mines in the Dominican Republic has lots to see! It contains a nicely preserved,stingless bee (genus Proplebeia, species dominicana,now extinct) with a rare Carpenter ant (Family Camponotus) along with a large Moth with long antennae and a group of 10 flies (mainly fungus gnats) from an ancient tropical forest. The amber itself has a lovely, rich red color.

Geological studies have dated Dominican amber to be between 17 and 20 million years old.

This particular bee is no longer seen in the Dominican Republic or Haiti as this particular species is confirmed to be extinct.

Stingless bees are the most common bee found in Dominican amber. They would collect resinfrom the amber tree (Hymenaea protera, now extinct)in order to build their nests. Hence, they would often get caught. Rarely, stingless bees can be found with resin balls on their hind legs.I very rarely come across bees with resin.

This piece originated fromthe Dominican Republic.The piece itself weighs 4.8 grams and has approximatedimensions of 3.6 cm length, 1.9 cmwidth, and 0.9 cmheight.NOTE:2.54 cm is approximately 1 inch. This piece is genuine amber formed over millions of years of polymerization.

Please note that the saltwater test to identify real from fake amber is not reliable. The saltwater test claims that real amber will float in saltwater while fake amber will sink.

However, many amber sources or even specimens will not float in saltwater as their botanical (plant) composition as well as fossil inclusions are such that they are more dense than saltwater and so sink. I do not sell fake amber. My response should help demonstrate this.

Dominican amber is known for the clarity and preservation as well as varietyof its inclusions. Such things as insects, arachnids, and botanicals can be found.
