DELTA IV GPS IIF-6 PROUD TEAM MEMBER USAF MISSION VEHICLE PATCH SPACE ULA

The GPS IIF-6 mission PATCH is circular with an inner red border and outer white border. This GPS satellite has been named after the star Rigel, which is the brightest star in the constellation Orion. This is shown on the patch as the yellow star with the white. The Japanese drum, “Tsuzumi”, is used in Japan to help iden-tify the constellation. In Japanese culture, Rigel is sometimes called Genji Boshi and a bright red star in Orion, Betelgeuse, has the name of Heike Boshi. Those names hearken back to the Heian era (794-1192) in Japan. They represent the war between the Taira (Heike) and Minamoto (Genji) families. The colors of Taira were red, and the colors of the Minamoto family were white. Ultimately, the Mi-namoto (Rigel) family won the war and ushered in an era of Samurai warriors. These two bright stars of red and white still do battle with the stars in the belt holding them apart. The GPS program’s Navstar symbol is to the right of the patch with the earth to the right bottom. The Delta IV text is displayed on the bottom border representing ULA’s efforts along with the Delta IV Medium+ (4,2) seen flying out of the patch. The 5 red stars represent the 5th Space Launch Squadron. The mission name is inscribed along the top of the patch.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
