DETAILS: Original circus photograph of theDorothy Herbert appearing with chimpanzee while appearing with Alfonse De Joghe's Chimpanzee Act. The back of the photograph is dated"1936 CIrca" but we believe that it may be older (1930?) based on Herberts costume and other photos from this collection.

Dorothy Herbert (b. 1910) was a renowned circus performer,horsewoman and trainer. In her career Dorothy worked with a wide variety of trainers, circuses; and trained &styled many different animals. Styling is how you display an animal and your routine before an audience. Her master os this skill is evident in this photo. Note how relaxed both the chimpanzee and Herbertappear before the camera. A rare feat.

Alphonse De Jonghe(b. 1911) was the son of the famous circus ringmaster Alphonse DeJonghe (Sr.).A white clown performer, De Jonghebegan to incorporate chimpanzees into his comedy routine early on. This circa 1936 photograph of one of his chimps and his assistant Herbert is amongstthe earliest known photos of hisChimpanzee Act to exist. Measures 8" x 10" inches.
