D&RGW (Rio Grande) #487 & #492, First Cumbres Turn, 9/9/64 – 4 Ektachrome 35mm Slides The previous day’s freight was broken into two trains, or turns, for the assault on Cumbres Pass this September 9, 1964 day. Locomotives were #487 as the road engine and #492 as the helper pushing. The action is at Windy Point and #487 at the then-Highway 17 overpass. The stars for both turns are #487 ( K-36 class 2-8-2, Baldwin 1925) and #492 (K-37 class 2-8-2, Burnham Shops 1928 conversion from standard gauge 2-8-0). Both of these veterans still roll on the same route in service on the Cumbres & Toltec. The 4 original Ektachrome 35mm transparencies are just slightly overexposed on an overcast day that made photography challenging (more light was coming through the clouds than appeared to be the case – should have believed the light meter on the new camera!). Nevertheless, they are all still good, usable photographs. Oddly, the first one at Windy Point appears to have a “white smear” just below the smoke from #487, but that is light coming through the gap between two rock outcrops at Windy Point (the gap is seen clearly in the second picture of #487). The third photo is of the #492 as the rear helper; the fourth is of the #487 returning westbound crossing over what was then Colorado State Highway 17 (the overpass and road still exist, though Hwy 17 has been relocated. One of the photos may have appeared in a Classic Trains special edition publication several years ago, and duplicates of one may have been sold decades ago under the name of Cal Photo Sales (lasted about a year). The four transparencies are protected in 35mm clear plastic storage sleeves. Add $1.55 S&H via First Class Mail (Canada orders add U.S. $2.35).
