About the item:

This First Day Issue (FDI) cancellation stamp & envelope debuted at the 2006 San Diego Comic Con. The FDI measures approximately 3 3/4 by 6 3/4 inches, is in nm/mint condition and will be shipped with the utmost care. Please note- the signatures are real. They are the actual, hand-signed signatures of Infantino and Giella. They are not pre-printed images on the envelope.

About the penciller:

Carmine Infantino (1925 - 2013) is one of the true legends of the comic’s biz. In addition to being one of the most prolific cover artists of DC’s Silver Age, Infantino is credited with a host of distinctions. He drew Green Lantern and the Flash during the Golden Age and co-created Black Canary. He designed the look for Barry Allen and as such is the very first artist to draw the Silver Age Flash for Showcase #4- credited with launching the Silver Age of Comics. His artwork is generally regarded as the very best to ever grace the covers and pages of The Flash. He also drew Superman #199, the first Superman/Flash race and the issue that set the stage for the numerous such races that followed.

While not as popular as Super Heroes, Infantino\'s work in the sci-fi genera of comics holds two important distinctions. First, his work on Adam Strange in Mystery in Space outsold all other Sci-Fi comics before or since with the exception of one title- Star Wars (and, secondly, it was Infantino himself who, as the artist drawing the early Star Wars comics for Marvel, helped the series beat his own earlier record on Mystery in Space).

He also made significant contributions to the Batman mythos. He designed and was the first artist to draw Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, creating the Silver Age character that would go on to appear in the hugely popular Adam West and Burt Ward TV show. He also created one of the most enduring Batman villains to come out of the Silver Age, Poison Ivy. Ultimately, Infantino is credited with saving the Batman line of comics itself from cancellation with his “new look” Batman, re-designed Batmobile and other Bat gadgets.

His other credits include Airboy, JLA, Spider-Woman, Suberboy, Charlie Chan, and other titles too numerous to list. He became editor, publisher, and ultimately president of DC Comics.

About the inker:

Primarily an inker during the Silver Age, comic artiest Joe Giella (1928 - 2023) is best known for his large body of work at DC during the 1950\'s and 1960\'s on such titles as The Justice League of America, Batman, Detective Comics, The Flash, Strange Adventures and, most prominently of all, Green Lantern.

Giella attended Manhattan\'s School of Industrial Art, studied at the Art Students League, and took commercial art courses at Hunter College. Breaking into the comics biz at age 17, his first published work, on the humor feature \"Captain Codfish,\" appeared in Punch and Judy Comics #11 in 1946. From there, he went on to freelance at Fawcett - where he worked on Captain Marvel - and then on to Timely. While there, Giella mostly worked on humor and teenage comics. But he also inked, preformed pencil corrections, and finished backgrounds on such superheroes as Captain America, the Human Torch and Sub-Mariner.

In the late 1940\'s he left Timely, following his friend Frank Giacoia, to work for DC Comics. At DC, he initially inked the Golden Age Flash, Green Lantern, and Black Canary before all their superhero characters (excepting Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) ceased publication. He worked on Westerns at this time, including inking Alex Toth and Gene Colan\'s work on the \"Sierra Smith\" feature and Hopalong Cassidy, respectively.

After the dawn of the Silver Age Giella would go on to produce his most widely recognized work, inking other industry veterans like Carmine Infantino, Sheldon Moldoff and, of course, Gil Kane. Many of DC\'s classic Silver Age covers bear a lushness and eye-catching detail thanks to his fine inking. He also did memorable pencil work as well, drawing DC\'s Batman newspaper strip for four years.

Giella\'s other work includes both Flash Gordan and The Phantom newspaper strips, commercial artwork for Doubleday and Simon & Shuster, and even some recent work for DC Comics. IllustratingMary Worthsince 1991, he retired from the strip in 2016.
