In 1859, RobertAugustus Chesebrough started the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company, anoil business, that produced petroleum jelly, marketed with thebrand name Luxor.A chemist, Chesebroughwas interested in marketing oil products for medicinal use.

He traveled around NewYork demonstrating his petroleum jelly by burning his skin with an open flameand then spreading the ointment on his injuries, and showing how past injurieshad healed, using his “miracle product.” He then filled thousands of one-ouncebottles with what he now called Vaseline and went by wagon around upper NewYork handing out samples to anyone, for free, in what many have called thefirst ever “giveaway.” He provided local pharmacists with the product tosell so they could meet the demand created by the free samples.

Over the years, therehave been at least seven different glass bottles utilized. The one I am listinghere started a new trend as it was the first Vaseline bottle without embossingon the side, manufactured from 1945-1955.The circular base is embossed with an arched CHESEBROUGH,MFG./CO./C.D./number 9/all horizontal, and NEW YORK in an inverted arch. The amberbottle, 2.25 inches tall, is in very good condition, free of cracks, and hasonly a small chip in the lip.
