This Qing Dynasty imperial dragon robe - Jifu showcases exquisite craftsmanship and auspicious symbolism typical for Imperial court members. Adorned with five-clawed dragons, clouds, and bats, the garment features a mountains and water border with wind-swept waves, Buddhist symbols, and motifs representing the Eight Precious Things and Daoist Immortals. Coined as "hurricane waves" by Alan Priest, the lishui border adds a distinctive touch to this robe, dating back to the early 19th century. The dragons are skillfully depicted with gold-wrapped threads, while the intricate embroidery employs colored floss silk and the complex Peking - Forofferden knot stitch. This robe embodies the rich cultural heritage and artistic mastery of the hierarchical Qing Dynasty.

Note: According to Linda Wrigglesworth and Gary Dickinson in Imperial Wardrobe, officials of varying ranks, princes and family members wore dragon robes lacking the dragon on the inner flap. Robes decorated with eight dragons were also worn by Mandarins in the first year after passing the imperial examinations. The gold thread was made by beating high carat gold into gold leaf and pasting it on to a paper support with lac from a lac tree. The gilt material would then be burnished and cut into fine strips before being wrapped around a silk thread core. The gold threads would then be couched down on top of the silk to form the dragons.

Inside flap ALSO confirms the original color of this Robe is NOT faded and is Classified as a “GOLDEN - YELLOW” a Noble Color for a woman consort with a Phoenix and other Expected Auspicious symbols embroidered in Peking knots with Gold thread outlines.
Minimal loss of silk floss around Gold wrapped Dragons couched outlines. Restoration of the Dragons gold wrapped threads : loose threads have been recouched and professionally stitched back down. Light blue silk lining is detached and frayed at the collar with frayed bottom hem and shows minimal repairs. Collar slip knot closure is missing loop.

This Beautiful Qing Dynasty robe has wide arm sleeves that may be turned over or under for different looks. They are lined in a royal blue damask silk which may be folded over to a Blue band cuff look or folded inside for a seamless all yellow style or with sleeves fully extended showing the Auspicious symbols in the Peking stitch embroidery of bats and peonies, on the white silk banding.
