You will never find another set exactly likely this. The company that made the form, and decorated the saucers is G D & C, the trademark for Gustave DeMartial and Cie out of the Limoges, France area, who only operated for 10 years, between 1883 and 1893. The cups and chocolate pot are marked A&D Limoges, which operated between the 1870s and 1910. According to Marks for Antiques which I subscribe to, A&D is documented but has a mostly unknown history. They are, however, believed to have been decorators who worked on blank forms made by others. Here is what I speculate about how these came together - it is clear that the forms all go together, as well as the pattern. I believe that this set was started in 1893, and when GD&C went out of business A&D purchased some portion of their forms, and completed decorating this set - either 1893 or maybe 1894 (which is why I put 1894 as the date, my estimate of the latest date it would have been decorated). All pieces are marked with the star used during that period that denote manufacture in Limoges France. It is a set with a story to tell!The pattern is simply lovely, with large old fashioned pink peonies (what I believe they are based on leaf and petal shape), mixed with some small soft blue flowers. There is something pretty to look at all the way around, and the elaborate detail in the form itself puts you in another time. Beyond hot chocolate, use for tea and coffee as a set, or mix and match and use the pot as a water or lemonade pitcher with some of your favorite glassware.
