ANRI Hand Carved”The Happy One“ or “The Dreamer” The Little Folks of the Salvans Italy 7” Troll

This is a vintage hand carved and painted figure made by ANRI in Italy. It is from the “Little Folks of the Salvans” collection. This piece is titled “The Happy One” or “The Dreamer”. It depicts one of the little folks lying down on a leaf with a bird and her chicks on his beard. There is also a snail behind the leaf. He is approximately 7 inches long and 4 inches tall, and is in excellent vintage condition with just one tiny spot of paint loss on the tip of the leaf. I have included closeup photos of this.

One of the most popular legends of the Ladin Valleys and the Dolomite Alps is that of a quaint, mysterious dwarf-like mountain folk known as Salvans. These trolls have only 4 fingers on each hand and 4 toes on each foot, and lived in caves and hollow trees high in the mountains. Their clothes were made of animal skin and they ate wild berries and fruits. They were a shy but efficient little folk without greed or desire for material wealth. The Salvans were a very jovial folk and would entertain people with their own folk dances. ANRI and the people of the Ladin Valleys cherish with great pride the memories of the Salvan trolls.

ANRI was founded in 1912 by Anton Riffeser, carrying on the proud tradition of the woodcarver's art handed down through his family since the 17th century. Each piece is carefully crafted by a small group of highly talented artists in the village of Santa Christina, high in the Dolomites of South Tyrol.

It takes 3 months to create an ANRI wood carving! The process begins with artist renderings of the piece, which is then taken to a master wood carver to construct. Perhaps what sets ANRI apart from the rest is the selection of wood used in their pieces. Only the best woods are used, which include maple, alpine pine, lime, ash, and pear. All the wood is air dried for up to 3 years and only the healthiest wood is selected. ANRI hand carved characters are highly collectible!
