Here is a little of the 4-page introduction: It begins by stating that the number of white inhabitants in the Territory of Alaska in 1880 was 430; and shows a steady increase over the next ten year reaching a number of 30,493 whites by 1900. It gives the yield of precious metals in 1891 as $772,197, and by 1900 the yield was $8,263,772. The introduction says, "These statistics show the importance and commercial value of the Territory to the integral part of the domain of the United States." The introduction gives details of the influx of prospectors, miners and businessmen looking for opportunity, spurred on by information acquired from a number of explorations authorized by the War Department in 1898 to learn of the geology of the area. The men who had partaken in these explorations suffered many hardships that winter, navigating over glaciers, forging trails, mapmaking and dealing with the disease of scurvy that had reached epidemic proportions. **CONDITION** - Excellent; with a little bit of minor wear at the top of the spine, so we have reinforced the spine with acid-free archival mending tape to prevent any tearing.
