The division entered the European Theater in World War to in July, 1944, landing across Utah Beach. It fought through the hedgerows of Northern France and fought through to Rennes.
The division captured Dinard and moved toward Brest where it kicked of the siege before moving to capture the Crozon Peninsula.
The division fought through and took the Huertgen Forest. The division crossed the Roer River at Duren and the Rhine at Rodenkirchen moving toward Siegen before attacking north and west to participate n the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket.
The 8th Infantry Division initiated its attack across the Elbe River on 28 April 1945 and captured Schwerin. The division with the 82nd Airborne liberated the Woebblin Concentration Camp.
