The RDS-1 or "First Lightning" test was the name assigned to the first nuclear weapon test performed by the Soviet Union. The United States assigned it the code-nameJoe-1, in reference to Joseph Stalin. It was exploded on August 29, 1949 at Semipalatinsk, Kazakh SSR, after a top-secret R&D project. It was a plutonium bomb similar to the Fat Man bomb that was dropped by the United States on Nagasaki, Japan with the explosion yielding out 22 kilotons.
