1926 Letter from Civil War Veteran to John Boos re Meeting Gen. Grant in NYC:
$57.50

1926 Letter to John E. Boos from Alfred King (1841-?), Union Army Veteran (1862-65). Interesting letter describing Grant\'s appearance and bearing when he met the young soldier. I typed the contents of the letter below (several words I couldn\'t decipher). I found that John Boos admired Abe Lincoln and collected personal recollections and other materials relating to Lincoln and the Civil War. He sent solicitation letters to the dwindling population of Americans born before the Civil War for memories of personal encounters with Lincoln.

Dear Mr. Boos:

Replying to yours of the 21 inst.:

In reference to General Grant: I am pleased to inform youthat along in the summer of 1865 – just about the time I received my Dischargefrom the Army, which was in June of that year, my attention was drawn to agathering of an unusual crowd in and about the old Astor House corner ofBroadway and Vesey Street New York City. Of course I became interested and soonjoined the crowd which were passing into the Old House: Inquiring I soonlearned that General Grant was in the building and the gathering was pushingits way in to see him – that was enough for me and I passed along and joined along line ending in the large corner room – Vesey Street and Broadway. I soonreached the General - guessing(?) at my reception by him, personally in my enlistedmans suit of blue from the ranks(?) – However, when I came within reach ofhim I held out my hand to him saying “I am glad to meet you General” when hegave me a most cordial grasp which of course I returned long enough to show my hearty appreciation. The General did not seem to be as large a person as Isupposed that he was – well proportioned man of about my height, viz. 5 ft 6in: He was neatly dressed in citizens clothes with a personal bearing that wasno more attractive than one of a score of others who were waiting to greet him atthe time.

Cordially yours,

Alfred King (85 yrs.)

Union Army Vet (1862-5)
