This scarce 130 year old Ribbon was issued in Hammond, Indiana to raise funds and support for the Labor Day Rally there on Sept. 3, 1894. This was the first National Labor Day Celebration, thereafter held annually on the first Monday of September.

This Ribbon is of particular historical significance because of the relation of the city of Hammond to the Pullman Strike, which began in May 1894 and concluded in August 1894.

From its inception, Hammond Indiana was a German,working-class city, with a large percentage of homeowners among both skilledand unskilled workers.

Local support for labor climaxed in 1894, when Hammondplayed a major role in the Pullman Strike. During the strike, local workersrefused to handle Pullman cars, making Hammond the last stop for westbound railtraffic entering Chicago.

City officials supported the strikers. But afterviolence erupted, federal troops occupied Hammond. On July 7, 1894, the troopsshot and killed a local carpenter. Outraged, a mass meeting of citizenscondemned President Grover Cleveland for having employed troops.

Pullman Strike

Angry Pullman workers walked out in May 1894, and the following month, the American Railway Union and its leader, Eugene V. Debs, declared a sympathyboycott of all trains using Pullman cars. The Pullman Strike blocked railtraffic and commerce in 27 states across the country. The strike became moreviolent, and even deadly, later in the summer of 1894.

At the end of June 1894, the federal government issued an injunction against the Strike.Railroad company leaders requested the federal government’s help to end thestrike. Federal troops were sent in July to enforce the injunction. On July 7, National Guardsmen fired into a crowd of people, killing at least 30 people. Many others were wounded.

The strike was declared over that August. Debs was imprisoned and the American Railway Union officially disbanded afew years later. The first national Labor Day was observed on Sept. 3, 1894.
