A truly fascinating read! Philip H. Conard lived in Ohio. This diary is FULL of entries dating from February, 1861 through November, 1861. There are some blank pages and some days there are no entries. Apparently Philip CONARD kept diaries for several years as there are others in the University of Iowa collection. (If you google “Philip H. Conard, 1861” you will be able to find more information about him, his other diaries and the collection at the University of Iowa.)I believe later on in 1862 he was in Company A, 135th Regiment of the National Guard of Ohio.
The entries include every day farm life goings on, some traveling that he did, some recipes, such as a recipe for “cheese making” and a recipe for making Samaritan Oil. There are also some accounting entries.
I am hopeful that this historical document will be preserved and also transcribed so that others may enjoy the information contained in it!
CONDITION: Most of the passages are legible and fairly easy to read and/or transcribe with a magnifier. Overall, the paper is remarkably NOT fragile and the pages can be easily turned as long as one is careful. String bonding mostly intact with only a few loose pages. Leather is worn but still decent. Unfortunately, previous owner put a sticker in the back “Papa’s Diary 1861” ( see photos) so I have not attempted to take it off.
