Circa 1830-1840. This stunning steel engraving of the painting, "Declaration of Independence," will turn your living room, library, or office into a national museum. John Francis Eugene Prudhomme's steel engraving of John Trumbull's iconic painting. Image measures 12.75 x 8.5 inches on 19.25 x 15.25 sheet of untrimmed paper. The piece is titled The Declaration of Independence with captions Painted by John Trumbull Esqr. and Engraved on Steel by J.F.E. Prud'homme (John Francis Eugene). The engraving image is in excellent condition. Some soiling in white margins as you can see in the pictures. The attached photos are of the actual print, please inspect carefully before making an offer.
John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence, painted between 1817-1818 starting at Thomas Jefferson's home and with his description, is a 12-by-18-foot oil-on-canvas painting in the United States Capitol Rotunda that depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to Congress.This painting, since its presentation to the public within the rotunda of the US Capitol, has served as the most popular depiction of that great event in American history. The painting has appeared over the years in numerous printed renditions and was used as an engraving on the bicentennial U.S. two-dollar bill. The first engraving of this painting was done in 1823 by Asher Durand but only about 275 sold, this engraving is the next best and held in inventory at museums such as The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Yale, Cornell and the American Antiquarian Society. Acquired from well established collector in the New England area.
