This is an sale of vintage science fiction fanzines. This particular sale includes issues #74 of GEGENSCHEIN, a “Personal and Acience Fiction Fanzine” edited by Eric Lindsay, out of Ryde, New South Wales, Australia. Its first issue appeared in 1972; in its early years, GEGENSCHEIN frequently featured material by other writers and correspondents, but it was always dominated by Lindsay’s writing, and it became a more personal vehicle for his ideas at the end of the 1970s. It eventually migrated to the web, and continued its run there through issue #102 in 2004. The title is taken from the German phrase meaning “counter-shine,” and refers to a faint nebula of light sometimes seen in the night sky, opposite the position of the sun, which is believed to be the latter’s light reflecting off gas and dust beyond our atmosphere.

This 73rd issue was completed in February, 1996. It is 14 pages long, reproduced by photocopy on A4 paper. Contents of this issue include Eric’s editorial, with additional events from his 1994 trip to the USA, including SMOFcon, Loscon and Ditto; and short reviews of 40 different works of science fiction and fatasy/ The letter column contains correspondence from Charles Broerman, Adrienne Losin and Diane Fox. Interior illustrations by Bill Rotsler. Very Good condition.

This is one of a series of sales of items from the collection of my friend John D. Berry, a longtime fanzine fan, who received most of these titles in the mail when they were originally published. John also reviewed fanzines for AMAZING STORIES in the early 1970s, and some of these items were submitted there.Still others were gifts or hand-me-downs from other fan’s collections.
