Savinelli Punto Oro Canadian (8002) 360 Degree Ring Grain & pipe Sleeve/ Handmade Italy - PRISTINE

1876 was a year of breakthroughs: Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone, Tchaikovsky completed Swan Lake, Mark Twain published Tom Sawyer. And in Milan, Italy, Achille Savinelli opened one of the first shops focused on tobacco and pipes.

In near mint, previously smoked condition, and close to featherweight, here’s a very handsome Punto Oro grade Canadian shaped pipe from the Italian Marque with a mix of sizzling ring grain on all flanks.

The desirable ring grain will promote a sweet and dry smoking experience. It houses a medium tobacco chamber. Draft hole is center. Chamber interior is very sound and very clean. There is an effortless draw. Tenon to mortise union is sound, snug and flush. The Vulcanite stem, with the gold dot inlay is a crisp jet black with no significant marks.

Pipe weighs a mere 1.2 ounces. No fills. No handling marks. Pipe passes a cleaner with ease. Comes with velvet sleeve, as shown.

Regarding graining, the well-respected authority on the subject, Carl Ehwa, in his landmark book, Pipes & Tobaccos, writes:

“When selecting briar pipes, quality of wood and workmanship and the type of graining are the prime considerations. Pipes made of dense, straight grain wood … have a tendency to absorb moisture much more slowly, which means they will smoke more sweetly and need to be rested less often. The bird's–eye, or end grain at the bottom of the bowl of a straight grain pipe absorbs moisture more quickly than other grains. Yet, because of its position, it allows the moisture to drain away from the tobacco and the channel, thus keeping the smoke dry.” ~ Pg 128
